INTRO: A 1998 R129 MERCEDES BENZ SL500 is being offered for sale by a classic car aficionado. This SL500 comes with Brilliant Silver exterior and black interior. It has the legendary and bulletproof M119 , 5.0 litre , V8 engine which is mated to 5 speed automatic transmission( 722.620). 1998 is considered the best year of the SL as it has the M119 V8 (Dual overhead cam with 4 valves per cylinder)which was replaced with the M113 V8 (Single overhead cam with 3 valves per cylinder) in 1999 and has the better 5 speed transmission instead of the earlier 4 speed transmissions. It also has the very desirable options for the year including the BOSE SOUND SYSTEM, HEATED SEATS and the very rare GLASS PANORAMIC ROOF ($20,000 option back when the vehicle was brand new). The R129 chassis is one of the most beautiful Mercedes Benz ever produced. As Mercedes Benz chief stylist Bruno Sacco puts it: “For me the R129 just has the perfect profile. I like it best of all when the roof is closed.” He calls it his most perfect design.The R129's exterior style was characterized by clean lines, balanced proportions, and a muscular stance that exuded simple elegance. These cars were over engineered and were far ahead of the time. This was the last of the real West German engineered , pinnacle of Mercedes Benz. These were the first production vehicles with automatic deploying roll bars. This vehicle was well over $120,000 brand new in 1998 and this pristine example is by far one of the nicest and best kept R129s in Canada. With the solid maintenance history, all original /immaculate condition, desirable options including the original glass top it will only increase in value while giving decades of trouble free motoring. It’s almost impossible to find a 1990s Mercedes that does not need any mechanical work or is rust free. It has been immaculately maintained over the years with proactive maintenance.No expense spared when it came to maintenance. All service intervals were completed on or before time. No sweats, no oil leaks, no rust, no malfunction lights. Gets parked in a temperature controlled garage from November to April. Never seen a Canadian winter, never seen salt, snow or even rain and has absolutely no rust in the undercarriage. Hand washed and waxed on regular basis. All brakes and tires have around 85 percent life left, all fluids and filters are brand new. All hydraulic roof cylinders rebuilt and the roof works flawlessly. VEHICLE’S HISTORY: The SL was originally used by a Mercedes Benz dealer principal in BC. It was shipped to Mercedes Benz dealership in Toronto when it was a few months old. Vehicle was bought by the second owner (a senior colleague of mine) in 1999 who kept it in his garage all its life. The Panoramic hard top was stored brand new in his basement and was never used. Vehicle was used primarily to go to golf clubs over the weekend and was always serviced at Mercedes Benz. I purchased the vehicle from him in 2019 and like him , kept it in a temperature controlled garage, away from the elements and harsh weather. It has never seen snow, salt or even rain. It has never been in an accident and comes with a clean CARFAX report. RECENT MAINTENANCE: Thousands invested in expensive maintenance items and upgrades on the vehicle.
