Description: A gorgeous antique Arts and Crafts / Mission style {Arts et artisanat / Style mission} five stack / tier barrister / elastic / stacking / lawyer bookcase. Built by the Fred Macey Furniture Co., Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, in c1920s. [Two tiers from an earlier purchase are red-brown in colour.]
Like other barrister bookcases, it features glass paned doors to protect books and other contents from dust. {Comme les autres bibliothèques d'avocat, elle comporte des portes vitrées pour protéger les livres et autres contenus de la poussière.}
As is common in the Mission style, the top and the base legs sections are squared off. Plywood back boards with veneer interior facing. Solid oak boards sides, door frames, top, bottom. Maple or birch veneer interior back facing. Likely original round metal door pulls. Dove-tail joinery on top inside fronts.
All 5 tiers have glass doors, which slide up and down. Each tier has a centre top rod slide track to guide the glass door. Square legs without taper. Dovetail joinery on the top and bottom of each tier.
Top 2 tiers: Decals on inner back: 1008 PO and 1010 PO, Macey, 58 Old English; these have a red-brown finish Bottom 3 tiers: Decals on inner back: Macey, 1010 QO; these have a golden brown finish
Dimensions: Overall 76” H x 34” W x 11.5” D
Original Macey decals on the inside back of the three bottom tiers: • two tiers with 1010 QO which have effective internal heights of 10.75” (with doors up); • one tier with 1012 QO which has effective internal height of 12.75” (with doors up);
Condition: Excellent vintage condition ( 9 / 10 ). All doors slide in and out easily.
The two top red-brown Old English tiers, had loose top front dovetail joinery, which was repaired by gluing and clamping, and then filling in minor depressions with plastic wood. Top most tier’s Front top edge worn in spots.]
The glass in the doors have no cracks or breaks and have the original antique "wave" in the glass. Doors operate smoothly.
A small piece of wood (0.25” Thick x 2” L x 1” H) inside one tier should be repaired / replaced, as it should hold the horizontal steel door tracking rod (1/8” diam) in place on the back end of the bookcase.
Two metal foot pads are missing.

Background info: The Macey Furniture Co. of Grand Rapids, Mich., opened in 1892. At first it was a mail-order company that sold desks made by others. But by 1900 Macey made its own furniture. In 1905 Macey merged with Wernicke Furniture Co. of Cincinnati, and in 1907 the company became Globe-Wernicke. Bookcases made before 1908 are marked with the name Fred Macey Furniture Company in script with a long tail on the y. Later pieces were marked Macey in a black or colored oval.
"Pieces produced before 1908 may carry the name “Fred Macey Furniture Co.” or simply “Macey” in an italic script, with the tail of the let “Y” underlining much of the word. Pieces produced after 1908 will bear a modified version of the earlier mark, with “Macey” in simpler script, surrounded by a black or solid colored oval."
This bookcase’s manufacture date is somewhere between 1908 and 1940, when the factory closed for good.
